Grade 6 : Determination of Nutrients in various foods

Humans need to consume food compounds such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats and vitamins to meet their energy levels.  Therefore it is important to eat a variety of foods that provide just the right balance between carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

The students of Grade 6 had studied about different nutrients and it’s importance in our food.  To find out whether a given food sample had a particular nutrient and to understand the chemical energy stored in food and the important process of break down in the body, Ms. Pooja Rai, took the students to the biology laboratory to test for the presence of protein, sugar and fats in food samples.

Material used for these tests were – egg white, glucose powder, peanuts, test tube, burner, holder, copper sulphate, sodium hydroxide, Benedict solution. The students were excited and seriously engaged to discover the change in colour in a given food sample to signify the presence of nutrients.
